The term ‘Netflix and chill' is often repeated. But, in India, the concept of this statement hasn't been around for too long. As a society, people in India are still pretty committed to watching TV for entertainment rather than subscribing to entertainment apps such as Netflix and the likes. The concept has already caught on in many foreign countries and this has become one of the most popular forms of entertainment in these countries.

However, the concept of entertainment apps is slowly making in-roads in our country.

There have been many new web-series and shows that have started on apps such as Amazon Prime, Netflix, Hotstar, Viu etc. Such platforms are bringing in a much-needed change in the nature of entertainment content in India. Additionally, with no problems of censorship, online platforms are able to host quality content without any compromise as well.

Let us take a look at some interesting web-series that are forcing the Indian audience to get on-board the concept of Internet entertainment as a replacement to the clichéd TV shows.

Sacred Games

This is one of the new web-series that has captured the attention of many people. Starring Saif Ali Khan, Nawaazuddin Siddiqui and Radhika Apte. This is the first India show on Netflix and has been helmed by acclaimed directors Anurag Kashyap and Vikramaditya Motwane. The trailers and the episodes have already created good talk and people are waiting for the next season with bated breath.

Made in Heaven

Zoya Akhtar and Reema Kagti is a killer combination that is sure to produce something very interesting. This is the show’s biggest plus point. Not a lot of details have been released. But, the show is expected to have Swetha Tripathi and Joy Sengupta in its cast and the overall vibe of the show is giving us a very positive expectation.

 Son of Abish

This talk show on Hotstar is great fun all along. Multiple seasons have already come out and the host Abish Mathew has made sure to make the show more and more fun each season.

With several popular guests including stand-up comedians, Bollywood actors, etc, this show is just what the Indian audience needs with the right balance of quirk and zing!

The Test Case

When a web-series has Nimrat Kaur in the lead and is directed by Nagesh Kukunoor, we know that it is definitely going to be high on quality content. This one is from the production house of Ekta Kapoor for the video streaming app ALTBalaji. This show deals with the story of a woman officer in the Indian army. Isn’t that exciting?

Maaya 2

Focussing on the stories of the LGBT community and their lives, this show is a bold attempt that is much-needed in our society today. As there is a need for people to talk openly about the LGBT community and accept the realities of their lives, this show by Vikram Bhatt is a step in that direction. The first season has been widely talked about and the subsequent season is being received well too.

Dev DD

Another one from the house of Ekta Kapoor, this web-series is a take on the classic story of Devdas. Just like Made in Heaven, this show is also for the ALTBalaji app. A lot of taboo issues are discussed in this show as the story is adapted to the modern-day lifestyle and the issues that the current generation faces.

With a lot of interesting content coming up, it is expected that video streaming and entertainment apps will surely take over the ‘idiot box’. With international shows giving stiff competition, our country’s talent will find new platforms in the near future through these apps.
